PROJECT PROPOSAL

Introduction…

For this semester I will be continuing my last semester project theme which is “Mandala into the design”. The concept of this project is to use an ancient art called “MANDALA”. With the help of the Mandala, I will be displaying the different design. My project is called “Mandala in Design” because it is a combination of mandala and design. The idea is to experiment with other designs of mandalas in different ways and bring an experimental look to that design. Besides that, there will be a combination of cool color, as this project is ending in the summer, I will be linking my design with the summer collection. This concept is used for design purposes to improve the overall appearance of the design. However, the main character of the project will be Mandala.

Changes made in this Semester…

The concept of the project or i can say theme will be same but the concept of the color is added in that theme.

In the last semester’s project proposal, I was supposed to used black and white color but in this semester there will be floresan color/summer color.

Technique will be same as decided in last semester.

Technique used for design…

More techniques will be used in the outfit or design,

  1. Mandala – Star of the design or outfit…
  2. Embroidery – For putting Mandala into the fabric…
  3. AMF Stitching – For enhancing purpose…
  4. Smocking – Optional (May or may not be used) …

Concept of the theme/topic…

When it comes to concept that how I will using my star of this project then I have many designs in mind where I can put the Mandala into that and because of that my designs will be more enhancing then before. Basically, I will be designing an outfit where it will represent the different aspect of the Mandala. Every design has a meaning so in this also it will not only the design but also the meaning behind that design or I can say meaning behind what Mandala. More of just combining Mandala and design I also have to keep this in my mind that how I will put Mandala into the fabric or what technique I will be using while I produced that outfit in physical world. So, for that technique which will be used is Embroidery technique. Through embroidery I can properly put in perfect way into the fabric. There is also one more technique to put Mandala into the fabric which is screen printing but that is the common technique and the concept which I want will not be come out. Through embroidery it will give a 3 – dimensional look in the outfit or fabric. Further I will be using summer color for the outfit as we are in the mid-summer, so that I link my outfits to summer collection. Adding to this there will also be AMF Stitching for enhancing purpose which will be used on the edge of the outfit. More over for the experiment purpose I will be using Smocking technique.

Fabric and Color selection:

Fabric: Linen, Cotton, Semi-cotton (More fabric may be used but it will only be mentioned once the design got finalize).

Colors:  For fabric I will be using cool colors as floresan colors indicate summer season, for Mandala it will be black color as on black color will perfectly showcase the art of mandala.

Week 2

New semester always begins with new things but this time my new semester begin one week later as I haven’t enrolled and because of that I was not supposed to attain 1st week lecture. Week 2 first lecture was of Nuala, she welcomes me with smile on her face as I haven’t attained her last week, she explained me what I have missed and then continue with present lecture in which she explained us the concept of designing Sculpture. Before getting into the next lecture, I get know from my classmates that instead of Rita we have new tutor named Julie McCarthy. I was excited for that but I think my luck was not with me, on that unfortunately instead of 2 p.m. we started our class at 4 p.m. because our tutor was having some issues with zoom link. As we started late, she explained us the concept of critical journal and the process of the critical analysis, she explained this all very fast within half an hour we completed our class. In Bhavik’s lecture we discussed something related to the topic I loved to talk and hate when people often so that kind of thing which is waste of plastic and in the last, he told us to play with plastic and recreate/redesign our waste plastic stuff.

Week 3:

In this week there was not much new as in Workshop as we were supposed to come across something we already study in our 1st semester. So, after discussing this with Bhavik about it we all together come to a conclusion that as on pre-master student will not have to attain the workshop but instead of that we will meet Nuala and Bhavik every week for private tutorial in which we will chew over our project headway. But when it comes to Julie, she explains us the cogitation of Planning, Reflection and Analysis. Further, we have a 15 minutes private session with here where I discuss my deliberation behind my theme and how I will be developing my topic every week. I think this private session was good idea because of this we can discuss our last week work and also how further or next week I can develop my project.

Week 4:

As for this week I was supposed to boil down on research work, as on I have already done my research work in last semester but that was on enough, I need to do more and more through which I get the kosher intellection and get to know what further I can add to this. As we have discussed that we are not supposed to attain workshop there will be only private tutorial I attain Bhavik tutorial and discussion work with him that I have done last week. In the Julie session we have go through the management of time and strategy on how one can stand on their work perfectly.

Week 5:

I am still on my research work as more research will lead me towards more knowledge about my project. In Julie session we came across the copyright, how copyright can affect someone’s work and important role it plays and in the end of this session we have given on form called Snapshots form in which we have to fill some section regarding our project work and in the last section of the form in which we have to write our goals, concerns and how we can solve out that problems. The second thing I was happy about that I have started my designing process and created some sketches related to my work where I can put my mandala. In Bhavik’s tutorial when he asked me about my work, I was not able to showcase my work to him as my sketches were not with me so he told me mail all my sketches which I have done and also advices me to create 50 more sketches of different shape from which we can pick my final piece of an art.

 Week 6:

As I have completed my research section, I was sure that whatever research I have done that will perfectly lead me towards my project work and I was very happy with my research section. I was more excited because as I have already started my designing process and also created some more sketches and now it’s time to put my mandala work into those designs. Bhavik was happy with my work so am I. Julie took us for the excited hunt which was treasure hunt where we have to search for the Ted talks, TV interview, LinkedIn profile and many others from library resource.

Week 7:

This week was terrible for me, I haven’t expected this but surprises come with happiness as well as some bad moment in our life and for me it brings some very worst bad moment. In the starting I involved with some argument with Nuala as we have some different point of view on my project work and actually, we both were right at our own opinion so it that case it was neither mine mistake nor her. For the Julie we have been in treasure hunt class in which we have to discuss about our progress, critical thinking & analysis and copy right check. I have some work to complete so because of that I finished my session early and left.  Further, the uninvited or unimagined moment arrive on Friday 23rd July were a 8 feet glass directly fall on my leg, the pain was unacceptable, it was more than tremendous pain which I was going through still can not imagine that moment in my entire life. Finally ended this week in hospital with tasteless food.

Week 8:

Started this week in the hospital as of doctor advised me to be in under observation. I haven’t attained most of this week lecture and the lecture I have attained in that also I was not able to concentrate because of the pain I was going through. There was nothing much for this week as I have sent my whole week in hospital.

Week 9:

Its time to worry about my project work as I was hospitalized, I was not able to concentrate on my wok I need to think about how I can develop my project further so here Bhavik advised me to take an extension regarding my submission. All my fellow classmate was very much into their work and I lacking my work because of my pain. I need to think about how further I can carry forward my project will I have to make any changes or it will be same as I wanted it to be, will I be able to complete my project on time, there were many questions I was dealing with. Then I decided that instead of physical outfit I will showcase the sketches of the outfit where there will be overview of the design with every information on it.

Week 10:

I got the extension so because of that now I can complete take a deep relax breathe and with few changes I can submit my project work. As further we were just in the discussion with our tutors about our project work how far I have to go. I have started putting mandala as well as colors into my design and once it got completed my color work it gives me a fresh look into my design. I also show this design to Bhavik and he absolutely love that design with color on it and after seeing that happiness on his face I got relief that yes now I’m on my track once again. As of I got the extension, I have one extra week to submit my work which will help me to complete my project the way I wanted it to be.

Project TitleMandala into the Design

Project Description:

My project for this semester is the extended project of last semester. In the last semester it was all about the research work, ideas, analysis and how I can connect two different art form together. In this semester I will be developing those ideas into the physical work. My project theme is “Mandala into the design”. The concept of the theme is to combine two different arts into one and create some unique piece of design. The design will contain Mandala which will be the main star for this project and there will be different design of pattern sketches in which I will be putting my Mandala Art.

Information Regarding Mandala:

This is my WordPress Link to find more about Mandala Art…

Research/Studies:

Whenever one start working on any project the most important thing, they come across is research work. Research plays a key factor role in any project work, without research and identifying the proper information of that art form one cannot flawlessly complete their project.

Primary Studies:

For me it become now no longer tough to discover the Secondary studies however locating a Primary studies become pretty tough due to the fact records of Mandala is of 560 BC. So, only a few humans had been aware about this artwork shape but however I superintend to gain as much as knowledge about primary studies. In the last semester one of my tutors advised me to go to the priest for the primary research as this art form is connected with religion and one of the key role Mandala plays is that it used for meditation so that help me a lot. In the semester going to the priest didn’t help me a lot due to the pandemic but in this semester as of now the situation being stable, I gain lots of information regarding Mandal. I also visited some of the museum and gallery which helps me a lot to gain more knowledge regarding the concept which I was looking for.

Secondary Studies:

Secondary studies were not that much arduous as of most of the knowledge are there on the internet as well as on social media. Researching about the Mandala was very interesting and fascinating as I was searching about something which I was doing from so long but haven’t studies about it just doing the art form that was shameful, but now I have each and every knowledge regarding Mandala. There were many artists in whole world that were master in Mandala art and also other artist who used Mandala with different art from.

The Finale outcome:

On the rationalization of my last semester research, studies and my escapade, I get through the combination of the Mandala and design in method of the formation technique in the final outcome. I have never thought that I will ever use Mandala in any other art form but now I’m using my own Mandala in my design that is something excited and new journey for me. The thing which I have to work on was to research about the root of Mandala in the deep down the earth as the history is from 560 BC, then I also need to look through the artist that have down some unique work in the field of Mandala and also for the artist that have been combining the Mandala in another art form. While combining two different art form one has to keep their mind open as of while doing something like this sometimes combination ruin whole project. This was the impenetrable affairs but when you really deep down into it nothing can stop one to get your best version out of it. It took me lots of time in the research work as of for me it was not difficult to find the Secondary research but finding a Primary research was quite difficult because history of Mandala is of 560 BC. So, in that case very few people were aware of this art form but any how I manage to took the primary research.

Once I completed my research section then I need to concentrate on the design because as I mentioned earlier its difficult to combine two different art form so in this the placement of the Mandala in my design/outfit was the second tough part. As I have to keep in my mind that Mandala don’t overlap the outfit structure as well as outfit doesn’t imbricate the Mandala art. But I passed this hurdle to the placement set in the perfect way and once the placement was completed it was looking way better than what I though.

Lastly, the color combination for the outfit. I was supposed to use black and white color for my design which was decided in last semester by me but in this semester at the end I change my mind and add floresan color because my project will be over in summer so in that case, I can connect my outfit design with summer collection. For this I have done many experiments with different color combination. I combined different color of contrasting texture to identify weather that color out lashed the effect into the design. Finally, I got some perfect combination color that I can put onto my design.

Now I have some prominent design that have all the stuff that was in my ideas as well in my mind. I’m very much content with my work as contemptuously present my work in real world.

Critical Reflection:

The actual meaning behind critical thinking is creative thinking, ability to solve problems, asking thoughtful questions, self-evaluating, open-mindedness and analytics thinking and when I look behind my project work, I can say that all the above-mentioned thing were there in my work. I have done creative thinking by combining Mandala into the design which was the idiosyncratic because while doing secondary studies I got to know that none or very few artists have merged Mandala and fashion design together and now I’m one of them. I also have asked many questions to my tutor at the end of the semester to keep my work look ethical.

Every time I start something there is also a thought in my head that shapes this, I have to discover something unique and I have to learn new things from this project or object. I have been doing mandala since last year 2 but while doing extensive research on mandala I knew that this art has a father but no one knows the founder of mandala It was used for meditation purposes and last but not least it has been used in different cultures for different ones Purposes and used in different ways.

Secondly, workshop plays an important role in my project because when I decided back then to use mandala on fabric it was just an idea, but there were a lot of other things that really puzzled me about how I was going to get this art on fabric. We have a Bhavik workshop in this workshop, the topic which we were discussing was screen painting at that point, I decided that I would use screen painting to get my art onto canvas, but after that and after doing extensive research, I also learned that I can use embroidery as well and it will also give me a three-dimensional look that further enhances my design. So yes, the workshop helps me to resolve a lot of my doubts.

Many time this thing happens with many of the humans, after certain point they give up on the thing which is not in their hand or out of their potential but in my case giving up was not an option I have made my mind that any how I have to collaborate Mandala and fashion design simultaneously. For me, when I take on some work, I never think about quitting, no matter how difficult or impossible the job is, so quitting is not an option for me.

Now when I look through my critical journey it seems like a mountain climbing, when you start climbing you feel excited then in the middle it seems arduous and feel like abandon and reinstate, after that when you are near to complete climbing you discem a delightful and finally when you veritable the climbing the merriment comes inside you that is some great adulation of victory.

Now I’m very much triumphant with my work and I think when any person looks through my work they will also feel the same as me and as a fashion designer I will always look through, how I can I give customer new design with unique concept and as of now I have done some very well work in terms of merging “Mandala into the Design”.

Research Proposal

Research is defined as careful consideration of study regarding a particular concern or problem using scientific methods. According to the American sociologist Earl Robert Babbie, “research is a systematic inquiry to describe, explain, predict, and control the observed phenomenon.

Research is one of the important factors when you are working on any of the project. By research one can get an information regarding their own theme, where he is lacking and what kind of creativity, he /she can improve in their own project. It gives to the chance to go through the artist work done in past and that can help you to compare own work with that work done by the artist.

So, here I also done some research work according to my theme of the project.

What is Mandala?

In the ancient Sanskrit language of Hinduism and Buddhism, mandala signifies “circle.” Customarily, a mandala is a mathematical plan or example that addresses the universe or gods in different brilliant universes. “It’s tied in with discovering harmony in the evenness of the plan and of the universe,” says craftsman Saudamini Madra.

Craftsman and math educator Fernanda Bonafini started making mandalas only for its delight. “During the time spent drawing mandala work of art, you feel a lot more quiet and more serene and your breathing and heartbeat delayed down. The sensation in your brain and body and their association, is awesome,” Bonafini says.

Individuals in various societies everywhere on the world have made mandalas, proposing that the structure addresses something profound inside each person. The splendid psychoanalyst Carl Jung accepted that the mandala addresses Oneself and that drawing a mandala gives an individual a consecrated space to meet that Self. He considered making mandalas a successful type of craftsmanship treatment, assisting with quieting and solace individuals battling with psychological wellness issues.

More information about Mandala will be on my own WordPress site as “An Art Called Mandala” and the link is given below,

Artist Research:

Art-based research can be defined as the systematic use of the artistic process, the actual making of artistic expressions in all of the different forms of the arts, as a primary way of understanding and examining experience by both researchers and the people that they involve in their studies.

Research is not only about the identifying the purpose of your personal theme but it also about the researching about the artist who have work on that field in which you are working.

My theme for the project was “Mandala into the design”. I look through the different artist who have done some tremendous work in the field of Mandal. This all artist has used Mandala art in different field.

Here are some artists on which I have done some research which has help me to improve my knowledge and my own work in the field of Mandala.

Embroidery Work:

Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as pearls, beads, quills, and sequins.

As I’m also using embroidery work in my project I also research through the secondary research how the embroidery developed and what will the materials using behind the embroidery.

What is Embroidery?

Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as pearls, beads, quills, and sequins. In modern days, embroidery is usually seen on caps, hats, coats, blankets, dress shirts, denim, dresses, stockings, and golf shirts. Embroidery is available with a wide variety of thread or yarn colour.

Some of the basic techniques or stitches of the earliest embroidery are chain stitch, buttonhole or blanket stitch, running stitch, satin stitch, cross stitch. Those stitches remain the fundamental techniques of hand embroidery today.

The process used to tailor, patch, mend and reinforce cloth fostered the development of sewing techniques, and the decorative possibilities of sewing led to the art of embroidery. Indeed, the remarkable stability of basic embroidery stitches has been noted:

It is a striking fact that in the development of embroidery there are no changes of materials or techniques which can be felt or interpreted as advances from a primitive to a later, more refined stage. On the other hand, we often find in early works a technical accomplishment and high standard of craftsmanship rarely attained in later times.

Embroidery can be classified according to what degree the design takes into account the nature of the base material and by the relationship of stitch placement to the fabric. The main categories are free or surface embroidery, counted embroidery, and needlepoint or canvas work.

Materials:

A needle is the main stitching tool in embroidery, and comes in various sizes and types. The fabrics and yarns used in traditional embroidery vary from place to place. Wool, linen, and silk have been in use for thousands of years for both fabric and yarn. Today, embroidery thread is manufactured in cotton, rayon, and novelty yarns as well as in traditional wool, linen, and silk. Ribbon embroidery uses narrow ribbon in silk or silk/organza blend ribbon, most commonly to create floral motifs.

Surface embroidery techniques such as chain stitch and couching or laid-work are the most economical of expensive yarns; couching is generally used for goldwork. Canvas work techniques, in which large amounts of yarn are buried on the back of the work, use more materials but provide a sturdier and more substantial finished textile.

In both canvas work and surface embroidery an embroidery hoop or frame can be used to stretch the material and ensure even stitching tension that prevents pattern distortion. Modern canvas work tends to follow symmetrical counted stitching patterns with designs emerging from the repetition of one or just a few similar stitches in a variety of hues. In contrast, many forms of surface embroidery make use of a wide range of stitching patterns in a single piece of work.

Machine:

Contemporary embroidery is stitched with a computerized embroidery machine using patterns digitized with embroidery software. In machine embroidery, different types of “fills” add texture and design to the finished work. Machine embroidery is used to add logos and monograms to business shirts or jackets, gifts, and team apparel as well as to decorate household linens, draperies, and decorator fabrics that mimic the elaborate hand embroidery of the past.

Machine embroidery is most typically done with rayon thread, although polyester thread can also be used. Cotton thread, on the other hand, is prone to breaking and should be avoided if under 30 wt.

There has also been a development in free hand machine embroidery, new machines have been designed that allow for the user to create free-motion embroidery which has its place in textile arts, quilting, dressmaking, home furnishings and more. Users can use the embroidery software to digitize the digital embroidery designs. These digitized designs are then transferred to the embroidery machine with the help of a flash drive and then the embroidery machine embroiders the selected design onto the fabric.

Project Evaluation

How I decide on what project I will work on…

For this semester finding a project theme was quite difficult for me because I wanted to work on something that never been used in fashion world or very little work done on that particular topic. I have gone through many of the topic

I started research on different topic like “Technique used in designing”, “Recycle the materials”, “Best out of waste” and many more like this but somehow, I was aware that this all topic is used several times by many other artists and all of them are common topic and was not up to the expectation which I was looking for. I started researching into depth because I know more research will leads me towards more interesting topic /theme for my project which I can carry forward to the second part.

Then one day in my leisure time I was working on my unfinished mandala at that time I got an idea, the idea which I was looking for and that was what if I make a mixture of Mandala and fashion design and there I was with my topic/theme and that was “Mandala into the design”.

So, this is how I got my topic for this semester project.

Research…

The best part, most important and difficult part of every project is research work because sometimes one cannot find the proper resource and sometimes lack of information.

For me it was not difficult to find the Secondary research but finding a Primary research was quite difficult because history of Mandala is of 560 BC. So, in that case very few people were aware of this art form but any how I manage to took the primary research. For the primary research one of my tutorial Bhavik suggested me to go to the priest because Mandala is an ancient art and one thing which is mostly used in Mandala is for meditation purpose. I didn’t get much information from them also but somehow it helps to gain very short knowledge about Mandala.

But when it comes to Secondary research, I gain lots of knowledge form the internet. I found concept behind the Mandala, what was main reason behind the Mandala, from where it all started, in what form it is used and many more that was relatable with Mandala. I also researched about many artists who doing Mandala art form as well as combining Mandala with other art form. At that time, I get know that there was no artist who has used Mandala into the fabric so while knowing that I feel very confident that I’m doing something unique.

Visiting gallery or museum for research…

The problem I faced was, just because of this pandemic I was unable to visit any of the museum or art gallery to learn more about Mandala. Personally, I fell that when you see something physically or read physically at that time you can endure more than any online research.

Process of the project…

The process behind the thinking of the idea and how it will move forward is the second difficult thing because while to planning everything that idea is in your mind so at that time everything will be going as per your plan but when you put that idea into the real world at that time you will you facing the difficulties and the problems. So, as we just have to write the project proposal for our theme it seems to be an easy job but the real hurdles will be in next phase when we will come across the physical demonstration of our project.

Workshop help…

I will definitely say yes for this because when I decide of using Mandala into the fabric at that time it was just an idea but there were many other things that how I will put that art into the fabric I was very much confused. On the other we have a workshop of Bhavik in that workshop the topic which was supposed to discuss was screen painting, at that time I decided that I will used screen painting for putting my art into the fabric but after that and researching into depth I also get to know that I can also used embroidery and it will also give me a 3-dimensional look which will enhance my design more. So yes workshop help me to resolve many of my question.

 Giving up…

For me when I taken some work in my hand, I never take that though in my mind of giving up no matter how difficult or impossible that work will be. So, for me giving up is not an option.

Learning…

Whenever I start something there is also one thought in my mind that form this, I have to discover something unique and have to learn new things from that project or object. I was doing Mandala from last 2 year but while researching about Mandala in depth I get know that this art from has a father but no one knows the founder of the Mandala, the second thing which came across my research was in ancient time this art form was used for meditation purpose, lastly but not least that it was used in different culture for different purpose and different ways.

Time management…

I personally am not the time management person; it all depends on my mood so when it comes to time management, I’m the worst person to ask this question or to answer this question.

Reflection…

Reflection is just the propose pf remembering the work done in your past and I don’t fell it help me to develop my project because my project is mine so I personally know more about it rather than anyone else, so in that case the relate work I know what I have to get from where. So, reflection I personally don’t fell help me to develop my project. This is my personally opinion may be someone else thought regarding this may be different from me.

Final outcome

I will not say this as to be my final outcome because it’s just a half way still there will be many more problems and difficulties are there in my way which I have to face when I start the physical approach towards my final work.

But till date the collection of all data, research, though process, idea, learning, process and the final outcome which I have prepared in my mind totally on the paper work, so in that case I’m totally satisfied with my own work.

Repeating the project in the future…

As I mention that it’s just a project proposal not a final outcome so right now, I’m not sure about whether any changes will be there in future if I repeat the same project or not. But right now I’m very much satisfied with my own work so right big NO.

Mandala into the Design…

Introduction:

For this semester I will be using an ancient art called “MANDALA”. With the help of the Mandala, I will be displaying the different design. It will be the combination of Mandala and the design so my project will be called “Mandala into the Designs”. The idea is to experiment with the Mandala in the different design in different way and take out the experimental look into that design. More over there will many other techniques will be used for the designing purpose to enhance that overall look of that design. But the main star of the project will be Mandala.

IDEA OF COMING UP WITH MANDALA INTO THE DESIGN…

At the starting of the course, I go through the imagination is more important than knowledge. How observing, visualization, interpreting, imagination, sharing idea makes you more talented. It’s not what you look that matter, it’s what you see. From this, I started observing the thing which was around me, and after looking through all that stuff I get to know how designs, techniques and outlandish play an important role in every single piece of art. Adding to this to make a unique design one must need a star for their design which will help that design to achieved appreciation. But this was just an imagination I was still looking for something unique that reflect my designing skill. This time I have to keep several things in my mind while choosing the topic/theme because I have to choose something which I can carry forward in the next semester.

To understand this, I started research on different topic like “Technique used in designing”, “Recycle the materials”, “Best out of waste” and many more like this but somehow, I was aware that this all topic is used several times by many other artists and all of them are common topic and was not up to the expectation which I was looking for.

Reason behind choosing Mandala…

The reason behind choosing this topic/theme was from last few months I thinking how can I further developed my mandala skill and what unique stuff I can carry forwards in the world of Mandala and after getting this idea of putting Mandala into my design I have something in my mind where I can develop my Mandala as well as my designs.

Technique used for design…

More three technique will be used in the outfit or design,

Adding to this there will also be AMF Stitching for enhancing purpose which will be used on the edge of the outfit. More over for the experiment purpose I will be using Smocking technique.

Fabric and Color selection:

Fabric: Linen (More fabric may be used but it will only be mentioned once the design got finalize).

Colors:  For fabric Black or Wine color, for Mandala if its black color fabric then combination of cool colors will be used in the embroidery for Mandala and if its Wine color then white color will be used for Mandala.

An Art Called MANDALA…

If ever you’ve studied non secular Asian art, you’ve doubtless encountered a pattern. A mandala, that is Sanskrit for “circle” or “discoid object,” may be a geometric style that holds an excellent deal of symbolism in Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Mandalas are believed to represent totally different aspects of the universe and are used as instruments of meditation and symbols of prayer most notably in China, Japan, and Tibet.

In their most elementary type, mandalas are circles contained among a sq. and organized into sections that are all organized around one, central purpose. They’re usually created on paper or artifact, drawn on a surface with threads, designed in bronze, or inbuilt stone. whereas extraordinary as a standalone work of art, mandalas hold symbolic and reflective that means on the far side their spirited look.

Mayans, Aztecs, Australian natives and European Catholics all made mandalas in some structure; however, mandalas are generally normal in Buddhist and Hindu craft of the Indian subcontinent.

A pattern may be a non-secular and ritual image in Asian cultures. It is understood in two totally different ways: outwardly as a visible illustration of the universe or internally as a guide for many practices that happen in several Asian traditions, together with meditation. In Hinduism and Buddhism, the assumption is that by coming into the pattern and continuing towards its centre, you’re radio-controlled through the cosmic method of remodelling the universe from one in every of suffering into one in every of joy and happiness.

A Belief History of Mandala

Siddhartha Gautama, the author of Buddhism, was brought into the world in the locale currently known as Nepal. Despite the fact that there is no affirmed date of his introduction to the world, students of history trust it to be around 560 B.C. It is perceived that Gautama left his realm subsequent to getting mindful of human affliction, where he looked to accomplish illumination through reflection and insightful activity. He started to lecture his way of thinking across parts of India, where he acquired faithful supporters and in the long run set up the first sangha, Buddhist people group of priests.

As these Buddhist priests ventured to every part of the Silk Street, an old organization of shipping lanes that associated the East and West, they carried Buddhism to different grounds. They conveyed mandalas with them and brought the act of painting these profound syntheses to different pieces of Asia, showing up in locales like Tibet, China, and Japan by the fourth century. In spite of the fact that established in Buddhism, mandalas before long got present in Hinduism and other strict practices. Painters of the profound specialty were regularly devout laymen, who were dispatched by a supporter. They worked situated on the floor with a composition propped in their laps or before their crossed legs.

Types of Mandalas

There are different kinds of mandalas found in various societies and utilized for a large number of purposes, both masterfully and profoundly. The following are three fundamental kinds of mandalas and how they are utilized.

  1. Teaching Mandala

Instructing mandalas are representative, and each shape, line, and shading addresses an alternate part of a philosophical or strict framework. The understudy makes their own mandala dependent on standards of plan and development, extending a visual symbolization of all that they have learned. Instructing mandalas fill in as brilliant, mental guides for their makers.

2. Healing Mandala

Mending mandalas are more instinctive than showing mandalas, and they are made with the end goal of contemplation. Recuperating mandalas are expected to convey shrewdness, summon sensations of quiet, and channel centre and focus.

3. Sand Mandala

Buddhist priests and Navajo societies have since quite a while ago utilized sand mandalas as a conventional, strict component. These complex plans utilize an assortment of images produced using hued sand that address the fleetingness of human existence.

Imagery in Mandalas

Inside their multifaceted round designs, you can discover regular images all through mandalas. Generally, they remember the presence of Buddha’s brain for a theoretical structure, most ordinarily addressed as a wheel, tree, blossom, or gem. The middle is a speck, which is an image thought about liberated from measurements. It is deciphered as the beginning stage, the start of consideration, and commitment to the heavenly. From that point, the dab is encircled by lines and mathematical examples that represent the universe, incorporated by the external circle which addresses the recurrent idea of life. Some normal images inside the mandala include:

Wheel with eight spokes:

The roundabout idea of a wheel functions as a creative portrayal of an ideal universe. The eight spokes address the Eightfold Way of Buddhism, an outline of practices that lead to freedom and resurrection.

Chime:

Ringers address a transparency and discharging of the brain to permit the passage of insight and clearness.

Triangle:

When confronting upward, triangles address activity and energy, and when confronting descending, they address innovativeness and the quest for information.

Lotus bloom:

A consecrated image in Buddhism, the balance of a lotus portrays balance. As a lotus ventures up from submerged into the light, so too does a human go after otherworldly arousing and edification.

Sun:

A mainstream reason for current mandala designs, suns will in general address the universe, frequently conveying implications identified with life and energy.

How Mandalas Are Utilized

Mandalas are utilized for an assortment of strict customs, reflection, and present-day settings. The conventional Tibetan mandala, found in Buddhism, portrays the edified territory of Buddha through sand workmanship. Examples are shaped on the ground utilizing metal and a little cylinder to make the specific surface and association of the grains. Making this can require weeks, and not long after it’s finished, it is annihilated to line up with the Buddhist conviction that nothing is perpetual.

As it identifies with present day setting, mandalas are utilized in an assortment of ways. In yoga, mandalas address similar old beliefs; meaning a holy space to close away outside impacts. Frequently, mandalas are situated around the studio and at times even drawn during contemplation periods. Likewise, mandala craftsmanship is utilized in mending circles, a training that gets from Local Americans. The circles are regularly connected with the reclamation of the body, psyche, and heart.

Mandalas have likewise been found in dream catchers as a way to ensure the individual dozing. A well-known thing in Western societies, you can undoubtedly distinguish the shape and examples of a mandala inside most dream catchers.

A profound image in Asian craftsmanship, mandalas have since become a famous, reflective component for a wide range of societies. In Hindu and Buddhist societies specifically, mandalas and thangkas fill in as a portrayal of the universe and a guide on the way to edification. We’ve since seen the mathematical plan show up in yoga studios, dream catchers, mending circles, and other reflective practices. The propensity for making and gathering mandalas is an extraordinary practice that is planned to re-establish internal harmony and insight inside.

MANDALA IS MORE THAN WHAT WE KNOW

Mandala art is one most profound art. Mandala is about creating and breathing in while it is been created. This art is not just good to see and has that good look tag but also the details you will see as you create one or watch one. This is a simple art form which can take creator and viewer both on the journey of an unending starring and gazing. The way you will watch and stare and discover things in a master’s painting the same way you will marvel at good mandala.

Mandala is like a Jalebi; it is usually circular in shape and filled with the sweetness of tiny details along with crisp layer of eye-catching shapes which are filled inside. Whether you are a master or beginner, if you just have a pen and a paper and some time you can create wonderful Mandalas. Mandalas vary from button size to wheel size or even bigger, so you see how much freedom this art form has to offer! You can choose your own colors and canvas, monochrome is recommended for beginners to avoid any confusion regarding the color scheme.

This is an ages old art form and there should not be any pro tips or how to tips but this is digital era and we have shaped ourselves into having tips for anything and everything, so the only tip here will be watching your hand and how it draws the shapes and follow it, that shall lead to more perfect shape and size.

Mandala allows your brain to think deeper and this is the reason why it is often used to practice meditation. One thing which this art form allows to absorb is that repetition can be beautiful and hold your eyes. Here repetition is the key, more the better just like rehearsing classical music.

Remember, it is about which space is left blank and not about how accurately you put your shapes. This art is a perfect example of being imperfectly perfect, look deeper and you will find tons of flaws in hand made mandala but at the end you will only adore it more.  After all, nothing can match the beauty of hand-made art. Here is the picture of a Mandala in which I tried experimenting by making it asymmetrical and using different shapes in single row and this turned out great, one can watch it for hours and various kind of thoughts will line in head, it provokes better and endless thoughts.

What is Mandala for you ?

Mandala and its significance can differ from person to person, for me Mandala art is that corner of life where you feel everything will be okay and things will shape itself. It is a space which allows me freedom and never judges my repetition. Simultaneously for someone else it might just another form of design or it might be a thing for killing time for person sitting next to me in metro. Well, that is the beauty of Mandala; you can derive and understand and practice it the way you want.

I have seen many mothers teaching their daughters this art and I often question myself why there so fewer male participants in this art form, in India this art form is mostly considered gharelu i.e., which remains in home. Digging further into this I got know that in several parts of the country Mandala is practiced by brides to be, these girls go on to hand embroidery Mandala on rather big piece of cloth and later they take this with them as a memory. Here we are not digging into gender roles but the question is pertinent. The art itself never discriminates than why should we? click on this link to read interesting things about Mandala.

The picture above is of the Mandala I created within a square and later erased the boundary, this turned out to be a different form, it is Mandala yet it looks incomplete until you decide to look at it for some time and realize that it is complete, it has a definite shape and size. This is Mandala for me, hours of gazing and coming up with a new story. Writers reading this take it from me, your writer’s block can be healed with Mandala, it helps the creative juices to flow down rapidly as it provokes thoughts inside thoughts. Mandala knows no bounds so should you. Take a pen and paper try it out.

In the comment section below do let me know your thoughts on Mandala and this blog. Till then happy creating.

Project Draft…

MANDALA INTO THE DESIGN
In the starting of the lecture, I came across that in this semester our project will be divided into two part in first part we have to research about the topic/theme which we have selected and in second part we have to develop that idea practically. After knowing this I gone through many of the theme/topic on which I can work and make myself even better in the world of fashion design.

IDEA OF COMING UP WITH MANDALA INTO THE DESIGN…
At the starting of the course, I go through the imagination is more important than knowledge. How observing, visualization, interpreting, imagination, sharing idea makes you more talented. It’s not what you look at that matter, it’s what you see. From this, I started observing the thing which was around me, and after looking through all that stuff I get to know how designs, techniques and outlandish play an important role in every single piece of art. But this was just an image I was still looking for something unique that reflect my designing skill. This time I have to keep several things in my mind while choosing the topic/theme because
I have to choose something which I can carry forward in the next semester.
To understand this, I started research on different topic like “Technique used in designing”, “Recycle the materials”, “Best out of waste” and many more like this but somehow, I was aware that this all topic is used
several times by many other artists and all of them are common topic and was not up to the expectation which I was looking for.
I started researching into depth because I know more research will leads me towards more interesting topic/theme for my project which I can carry forward to the second part. Then one day in my leisure time I was
working on my unfinished mandala at that time I got an idea what if I make a mixture of mandala and fashion design and there I was with my topic/theme.

REASON FOR THE IDEA…
The reason behind choosing this topic/theme was from last few months I thinking how can I further developed my mandala skill and what unique stuff I can carry forwards in the world of mandala and now I have something in my mind where I can develop my mandala as well as my designing.
Finally, my topic/theme is “MANDALA INTO THE DESIGN”. Here I will use my mandala skill and put
that design into my sketches and will form a unique design.

Reflection towards Research…

New semester with new subject always boosts me and makes me excited because I will be learning something which I haven’t learn before. Today with the beginning we came with the new tutorial named Rita Fletcher, she introduced herself very well and after that it was our turn to initiation, ourself one by one. Then we move forward and she takes us towards this semester module which was PAD101. This semester was all about the deep research and carry forward our project in next semester to develop that research into the model.

Once we completed with main aim of this semester, some of us who was not new for PAD explain our last year project to Rita and rest of the class, then we started our first week class with the Research and the area around which research revolve.

Research: Research is defined as the creation of new knowledge and the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings. This could include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the extent that it leads to new and creative outcomes.

I was already aware that research is of two type,

  1. Primary research: Primary research is defined as a methodology used by researchers to collect data directly, rather than depending on data collected from previously done research. Technically, they “own” the data. Primary research is solely carried out to address a certain problem, which requires in-depth analysis.

Example: Interview, Online survey, Observation, Focus group.

  • Secondary research: Secondary research or desk research is a research method that involves using already existing data. Existing data is summarized and collated to increase the overall effectiveness of research.

Example: Data available on internet, Public library, Education institute, Government agency.

For me new stuff was how your research gives you an idea, how it will help us to respond towards our own thinking and with that research how one can create their own sculpture.

How idea will help us to create work and that relate us to what we have seen or heard. Whenever we see some, we just have to record that so that we don’t forget that data and it help us in future to respond towards our research.

I haven’t think of the topic yet because for this I have think deeply as we have take this forward to the next sem and then developed it. But I have 2-3 themes in my mind so i was thinking to wait for one more week and then finalize my theme for this semester. Looking forward to next session that help me toward my project theme of this semester.

Final Design Sheet…

The project I’m looking forward to present is on the Innovation ‘n’ Technique in a Design. This will illustrate how we can use different technique in different way and create something innovation and how that design enhance the older design.

IDEA OF COMING UP WITH COLORS OF OUR LIFE.

At the starting of the course, I go through the imagination is more important than knowledge. How observing, visualization, interpreting, imagination, sharing idea makes you more talented. It’s not what you look at that matter, it’s what you see. From this, I started observing the thing which was around me, and after looking through all that stuff I get to know how new approach play an important role in every single piece of art. But this was just an imagination I was still looking for something unique that can reflect my own identity in it.

In the art workshop, we all have to introduce ourselves in that I observe everyone’s identity and get to know that people chose different approach with different prospective. How they can relate the different approach with their ideas. This was interesting starting with their perspective. So, I decided to include an approach and technique which was my identity. Yet this was not the end I still want something more interesting than enhance my project.

Theme:

Innovation ‘n’ Technique in a design is the approach which is the theme of my project. Innovation is the future, if you think beyond the everyone’s thinking you can create something new. Technique plays important role in every aspect and when innovation and technique come together on can create a piece of an art. This all ideas comes out from my mind from the technique which I studied during the course in which some of the technique I was aware of but I don’t know the name of the name. Through this study I got to know about the technique name as well as my thinking and design level which was inside me about how much creative my mind can think of.

My project relates to this because in my project I’m going to innovate the old design with the techniques which I’m known for or I can say that my identity. Through this project I can design the fashion in new era by putting the different smocking, weaving, heat manipulation, paper folding technique onto the fabric and create a design. This project will lead me towards many new thinking, new ideas and this will also bring my new identity out of me, which will help me to create new possibility of the new design.

DESIGN SHEET…

Exploration of design sheet…

Technical Design Sheet…

Briefing of the design Sheet…

  1. Smocking Technique (Honey Comb)…

Innovation for the design and that was my project and for this innovation i choose Smocking technique (Honey comb smocking).

2. Cuff Pattern…

I have choose this cuff pattern for y design because this semester is all about identity and when it comes to my identity whenever i put any formal chotes on my body two things are there for sure…

  1. French cuff with cuff – link
  2. Trouser fold from the bottom…

3. AMF Stitching…

There should be some little touch for every design that can enhance your desisgn so AMF Stitching gives my design a little touch…

4. Fabric…

Fabrics plays an important role in then clothing because without fabric one cannot design a cloth. But the choosing right fabric for right design is very important…

5. Jacket Sleeve…

Shape and cutting of the jacket sleeve and briefing for the parts…

6. Jacket Collar…

Jacket collar and parts description…

7. Button for Cuff…

This button is different from our regular button. Cufflinks are designed only for use with shirts that have cuffs with buttonholes on both sides but no button. These may be either single or double-length (French) cuffs, and may be worn either “kissing”, with both edges pointing outward, or “barrel-style”, with one edge pointing outward and the other one inward so that its hem is overlapped.

8. Button for Jacket…

This is the normal button which will be there on both the side of the jacket front…

9. Brooch for innoavtion….

It’s an ornament that is held by a pin or clasp and is worn at or near the neck or pocket. Innoavtion for enhancing the design, it’s all upto you weather you have to put this on your jacket or not.

Experiment 2.0…

While you are creating any art experiment plays an important role. By doing experiments you will find out whether you are on right track or you need to make any changes in what you art creating…

While i was desiging my finale design i have done some experiment with my design so that i can get to know that what I’m creating will go on the flow with my imagination or not…

For experimenting with your desiging you need a proper materials with help of you can find out your final outcome and in my case the most important was mannequin and fabric but i was empty handed, i neither have mannequin nor fabric but some how i manage with mannequin and instead of fabric i use paper. There is tailoring shop near my palce where she has a mannequin so i ask her to help me and she agree and give me some time to play with the mannequin. I keep shape, structure, design, innovation and technique in my mind while i was playing with the mannequin and paper…

So here are some experiment which i have done while finalizing my finale design…

Mood Board…

Mood Board always plays an important role when you are creating something. It gives you an idea how you can attach your work and how it will look when you present to someone. Fro the mood board one get an idea what color, materials, shape, texture, technique and more thing will it all link with your idea or not.

A moodboard is a visual tool that communicates our concepts and visual ideas. It is a well thought out and planned arrangement of images, materials, pieces of text, etc. that is intended to evoke or project a particular style or concept.

Why do we need mood board…

  • To give us a process to build a clear design story that we want to use in the space.
  • Using a moodboard helps you to express the vision you have in mind for the project.
  • Sometimes its very complicated to express your visual ideas to others. A moodboard is a very efficient visual communication tool.
  • A moodboard is a good starting point to get things done. It will help you collate and focus your ideas, and help to define the project.

WHAT IS A MOODBOARD AND HOW TO CREATE ONE?

moodboard advanced colour workshop klc school of design

As you’re reading a blog about interior design, I’m fairly certain that you have seen a moodboard before. Maybe you don’t know exactly what they are for, but I’m going to try and help you learn what they are and how you can use one to help you learn about your own style.

Before you start looking at styling and designing your own home, it’s important to define what your own style. Do you know what you do and don’t like?  You might be able to think of a few things that you do and don’t like, but can you picture them collectively and visualise the common thread that runs through them?

I bet you that you can’t (I can’t either). And that my dear readers is why we use moodboards.

What Is A Moodboard?

A moodboard is a visual tool that communicates our concepts and visual ideas. It is a well thought out and planned arrangement of images, materials, pieces of text, etc. that is intended to evoke or project a particular style or concept.

Why Do We Use A Moodboard?

  • To give us a process to build a clear design story that we want to use in the space.
  • Using a moodboard helps you to express the vision you have in mind for the project.
  • Sometimes its very complicated to express your visual ideas to others. A moodboard is a very efficient visual communication tool.
  • A moodboard is a good starting point to get things done. It will help you collate and focus your ideas, and help to define the project.

How To Create A Moodboard

As with most design processes. There is a ‘standard’ process that’s useful to follow. But as we are designing, I believe that being creative and not following the rules exactly will always give you the best result.

Creating a moodboard will help you to explore and ‘find your own style’ too. The best way to learn about something in design is to do it. Which is why I want you take some time to create a moodboard that represents your own style.

Think about your home, your clothes, your office, your holidays, things you dream of. What do they look like? What do these things feel like? What are the common threads? Is it a colour? A texture? A pattern? A feeling/emotion?

Collect images that represent these thoughts. These images will tell your story and when they come together will start to show you your style. The collection of images will represent your lifestyle and personal style.  You can take your time with this.

Move the images about on the board to create different compositions.  Play around with the images until you are happy with the images that you have.

I know that this is hard to do when you’ve not done it before, but we all start at the beginning. My first few moodboards weren’t very impressive but I started learning how they worked while doing it.

This isn’t something you can learn by reading about it. You need to do it.

Another important element to moodboards that can help beginners to convey their message very effectively is to use keywords to help tell your story. 2 or 3 well selected keywords that help you to describe the abstract message you’re trying to get across.

Here are some mood board whcih i created.

Experiments…

When we design something just don’t let that design in a paper put that design on body or fabric so that you can get an idea how that design looks like. In the past i used to do the same thing i just keep my design in paper sheet but and when i want to put it on fabric it was difficult when i get to know that this will not be posiible and then i have to recreate the design at the end of the time.

When you design something try to look at the differnet idea how one can mix the different approach towards that deisgn by mixing the ancient and moorden technique or architecture, sculpture and how you can use that all innovation into your piece of work and innovate your piece of art.

Here i have done something similar where i have mix some anncient and architecture into my piece of work.

Here i have use the building design into the cloth which was with me using black tap as it was on building and then i use woolen thread which is used for weaving and got my inspiration from a camel how the thread is attach with the fabric which was on him. So by mixing two different concept which is opposite to each other and after the mixture of both this what i got.

This want i have done when i was looking for something else and in the fun i have created this and it turns out the amazing piece of art.

Designs…

When we create something we all go through many of the design in which some of the design were there were we think that this design will not work and we put them aside. So in my journey there were many design which i have created and then just left them beside to create some more innovative.

But in my point of view no design is good or bad it all are the inspiration for us to create more creative and that design will use in some how in future to enhance your work.

So here are some of the design which i created before putting my finale design…

Never think that design you create will be waste or looks bad always keep designing… Then only will find your best outcome for that design.

The Journey…

Never stop designing, if you keep on designing you will find something innovative and new concept.

Keep experminting with your design so that one can get know that how your design look like. Here some of my experiment that i have done during this wonderful journey. This journey was like an rolar-coaster, ups-downs. When it all started it was like a wounderful dream that come true, studying something creative.

I have done many project during this journey some were excellent and some were average. I have also learn many new things which help me to build my final project. So let’s take a small tour through all the project and design…

01 to 10 design…

Designing 10 different things from 01 materials it was fun doing this when you test your knowladge and your ability…

So this were the 10 design i have created using Fabric…

Paper folding…

I have never done this before so this was something that i enjoy during i was desiging this paper folding.

Smocking Technique…

So here we are this was something which i have done before but i was unaware of the name, but now i’m fully aware of the name and the technique. This was actually great to learn something beyond your knowledge and i was very happy when i got an appreciation for this.

Creative Drawing…

How to observe and listen to the thing which is around you and create it in a small amount of time and also recreating that same design with descrese of time and test your ability with that.

Heat Manipulation…

It is a technique of creating sculaturing and embellishing effect on fabric in order to give it texture and unique appearance. From flat 2 dimension to 3 dimension. In this i have used different type of fabric so that i can get to know that which fabric turns in what shape.

Fabric : Organza, Silk Synthetics, Linen, Paper Cotton, Cotton mix.

Heat Manipulation Into Shibori…

This was intresting thing to play with the fabric, this i have never done before and i really enjoy while i was performing this activiry. How one can manipulate the fabric using kitchen accessories. How we can put the different shape onto the fabric by shibori technique.

Weaving Technique…

The technique which i have used before for creating the new style. But the fun fact is this technique was used in old age to weave clothes and that also hand weaving not on any machine.

Dough Model…

Once again creating something with the help of kitchen accessories. How one can use flour and manipulate the different design/structure into that wet flour.

Color Theory…

Here i get to know that color has also the different shade and code more then my imagination and every year there is one color which is introduce to us. How color play an important emotion in everyones life in different way. Theory behind the color and their prospective.

Food to Fabric…

Bascially, how to put the food color into the fabric. In the ancient time people use to dye the fabric using food, flower and many other stuff. Now a days also people are using this technique but its rare to see, most of the company use chemical color to dye the fabric.

This all were very intresting activity and to find yourself where your creative mind stand. This all activity were really mean to me because i have learn many new technique from this. This journey makes me more creative beyond what expect from myself. From where i start and at what point I’m standing right now and how far i get go through.

So this was my journey and which is not ended but the begining of the creation.

Weaving Technique…

Weaving is a method of textile production in which two distinct set of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric. Other methods are knitting, crocheting, felting and braiding or plaiting. The longitudinal threads are called the wrap and the lateral threads are the weft, woof or filling. The method in which thread are inter-woven affects the characteristics of the clothes. Cloth is usually woven on a loom, a device that holds the wraps threads in place while felling threads are woven through them. A fabrics band which meets this definition of cloth can also be made using other method, including tablet weaving, back strap loom or other techniques without looms.

In the ancient time people use this technique to weave the clothes wihout using any machine but with the hand. Now a days also in some of the village people use this technique to weave the cloth.

Study Statement – PAD000

Student Name: Amit Mandaliya (133591 – 20172579)

Pathway to: Fashion Design

Theme: Innovation ‘n’ Technique in a Design

Identity, every time I come across this word, I always think of its what identity is all about. Identity means the facts of being who or what a person or thing is.

From the day I started the course to date I experience many new things related to art, design and, creativity like smocking, fabric manipulation, heat manipulation, origami folding and, many other things related to this. From the above mention, I have gone through some of the techniques but I was unaware of the name but now I’m fully aware of techniques and as well as the name. After studying all this I got to know that a technique plays an important role when it comes to creativity of an art. Without proper technique one can create a design but with the proper technique one can create a master piece of a design.

Further, as time pass, I was still looking for something unique, at some stage I found something but later I drop that idea as it was not attaching with what I was looking for. Then one day as I was looking into my WordPress site and I got my missing piece of a design which was redesigning and innovation. This was the perfect thing which I was looking for and finally, I ascertained.

How one can innovate something with their new prospective and their thinking of imagination. Finally, after collecting all pieces I come to the closure that my final declaration will be on the Innovation and technique in a design. How one can innovate the design by creating new aspect, approach and technique.

Design will show that how a simple design can be reflected if the proper technique and new approach and some innovation can be mixed with that design. Looking forward to this innovation is the new pathway for success, and with new approach one can bring change in the fashion and trends.

Research, Technique and Process:

My project is all about innovation ‘n’ design in which as I mention above, I will be using different type of technique of smocking, weaving, folding, shibori onto the old design and innovate them into new design.

I have gone through many of the technique which are as follow:

Smocking Technique:

Smocking is an embroidery technique used to gather fabric so that it can stretch. Before elastic, smocking was commonly used in cuffs, bodices, and necklines in garments where buttons were undesirable. Smocking was used most extensively in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Smocking pleater was invented by Mrs. Read’s husband in South Africa during the late 1940’s to assist in his wife’s smocking venture.

Different type of Smocking:

  1. American Smocking:

American Smocking is otherwise known as Counter change smocking. It has been popularized by a young woman in Arizona, Anne Hallay. This smocking is done on gingham, striped, or a gridded fabric. Basically 5/8” stripped fabric is made into squares and a honeycomb or Vandyke stitch is used to bring the sections together. Finished fabric will have the illusion of a solid fabric. No pleating is used for this type of smocking. This type of smocking is more often used in teenager’s garments. English Smocking is of three types namely.

  1. Counter Smocking: This type of smocking requires a grid. Most often striped and checked fabric is used to do this work. No stretch is created in this type of smocking. Three times more fabric is needed to bring to the required length and width.
  • Mock Smocking: For this type of smocking, fabric folds are created. Any printed or plain fabric can be used for this work. Little stretch is created in Mock smocking. Only honey comb pattern is created in mock smocking.
  • Direct Smocking: Grid pattern is used for this type of smocking. Following the pattern small stitches are made and secured. Trim the thread and complete the pattern.
  • Canadian Smocking or North American Smocking:

Canadian smocking is also called as North American Smocking. In this type textural effect is created on the front side of the fabric. No pleating is required for Canadian smocking. A grid is drawn or designed on the back of the fabric. Later it is used to create the three-dimensional effect on the front side of the fabric. This type of smocking is not usually pressed or ironed. The texture would be flattened or destroying if the smocked fabric is pressed. Canadian Smocking has different technique.

  1. Lattice Smocking: It creates a beautiful pattern on the right side of the fabric. There are a few variations where the pattern of stitches is worked on the front-one of these is called flower smocking. Grid pattern is used to mark designs.
  • Fabric Smocking: This smocking is created with the grid pattern. Textural effect is created on the right side of the fabric. Three times more fabric is required and good stretch is created.
  • Reverse Smocking: This type of smocking is reversible. Patterns are seen on both    the sides. No thread is visible on right and wrong sides of the fabric. It is also called as honeycomb Smocking.

Weaving Techniques:

Different type of Weaving:

  1.  Plain weave
  2.  Rib weave
  3.  Basket weave
  4.  Twill Weave
  5.  Herringbone weave
  6.  Satin weave
  7.  Sateen weave
  8.  Leno weave
  9.  Oxford Weave
  10.  Bedford cord weave
  11.  Waffle Weave
  12.  Pile weave
  13.  Jacquard weave
  14.  Dobby weave
  15.  Crepe weave
  16.  Lappet weave
  17.  Tapestry Weave
  18.  Striped weaves
  19.  Checquered weaves
  20.  Double cloth weave

Fabric Manipulation and Heat Manipulation:

Fabric manipulation is the technique of creating sculpturing and embellishing effects on fabric in order to give it texture and unique appearances. From a flat 2-dimensional piece of fabric, you can manipulate it to become 3 dimensional and bring it to life.

Heat setting can be defined as a treatment by which shape retention, crease resistance, elasticity etc is given to the fabrics. It changes the strength, softness and dye-ability of the material. This technique requires the heating of thermoplastic fabrics to be transformed into the structure.

Evaluation:

In terms of evaluating my work, I will use the journal, sketchbook, critical journal and the final work which are reflecting each other. In the journal, the design trace and my inspiration and design thought could be found. In the sketchbook, the design sketch and the inspiration will be showed. In the critical journal, all the deep research will be shown. Comparing these three works, there will be a clear design pathway. That shows how I came up ideas with inspirations, what research I have did and how that research influenced me and how it embodied on my final product. Also, the response of the viewer and my classmate can also evaluate my work, through their comments I would know whether I successfully archive the goal that I want to reach.

That is a good index to find where my ideas came from and how I developed it.

Timescale:

I will make a timetable in which there will be a date and work will be mentioned so that I can push myself to complete my work on time and if I get any free time, I can research further more about new type of technique which will I can use in my design.
